Let me take you on a retro journey... back to 1984...
A firm favorite among the fans, this top 10 single has featured live so many times
right up to last year. It has such a crisp production very much in the vain of Stu Colman,
however it was in fact produced by Peter Collins (with Shaky as executive Producer).
This track was a real treat when it was released on the 8th September 1984. It was a
totally new track for us fans and to this day, not including 'hits' compilations, has
never appeared on any studio album (except a live snippet on the 'Let's Boogie' live medley).
C'mon..admit it.. everytime you hear this song you just HAVE to sing along. I bet for
the last 24 years of hearing it you have never just 'listened' anymore. It's a guarenteed
foot tapping sing-a-long! Having the lyrics printed on the sleeve certainly helped! The
video was a classic too in a cheesy way. 'Girl Locked Up For Love Of Rock n Roll
Singer'...somebody call human rights now! It's an unusual video too for an uptempo
Shaky track as we do not see Shaky mime or dance. He purely 'acts' this video (just
like 'It's Late')
LETS GIVE YOU ALL SOME 'A LETTER TO YOU' FACTS...
- First appeared in UK chart (at position): 15/09/1984 (No.23)
- Last Seen in UK Chart (at position): 03/11/1984 (No.57)
- Length of time in UK chart: 8 weeks
- Highest position in UK chart: No.10
It was written by the late Dennis Linde who among many other tracks also penned Elvis's
'Burning Love'.
Eddy Raven covered it and took it to the top of the US Country Chart.
The B-Side was a superb track - 'Come Back And Love Me' - written by Shaky.
It was available on 7", also as a Limited Edition Fold Out 'Shake n' Roll', Shaky Chart
Game sleeve (see Photo)
I believe the counters and dice were available from the Fan Club at the time! (is
this true? anyone remember?)
It was released on a 3 Track 12" single too and although A Letter To You was not Extended,
it did include the John Luongo Remix of 'Cry Just A Little Bit'.
The sleeve is a dam pretty one too! ..always good to see those bright red, round dial
telephones...
So, go dust off your single or pull out The Collection CD and give it a blast as we say..
