Remember the 1989 UK Tour? What a great tour that was. If you were there then maybe you
did what I did and bought a tour programme before the gig...
London Dominion, 7th April 1989. I Remember flicking through the programme in the foyer,
looking at the piccys and what not, then I turned to the inside back page.. whats this? it
read : " Epic are rush releasing a brand new single from Shaky called LOVE ATTACK You've
heard it live tonight - it's not on any Shaky album - so make sure you are the first to buy
your copy..."
I overheard a few fans talking about how great it was and I was itching to hear it! When
it came to the moment and Shaky introduced his new single I remember the hairs on the back
of my neck standing to attention as that intro started.. Boom - Bish - Boom - Bish.. Woah!
I was totally blown away and swore to myself that it had 'No.1' written all over it.
So what happened? Why did this barnstorming track only reach No.28 and spend 4 lousy weeks
on the chart? The problem was the same as the singles that precided it - NO BLOODY AIRPLAY!
If people don't hear it then how can they buy it? The same thing happened with another
Top 5 deserved single, 'Radio'. If even having the profile of the drummer of the massive
band 'Queen' don't get you airplay, then how could Love Attack stand a chance? What a
weird time the last bit of the 80's were. It seemed the whole record playing phenomenom
was controlled by trend setting idiots. It was a time of Kylie & Jason and all things Pete
Waterman and NOTHING was gonna get in the way of those tracks.
That's the irony though, because the album version of Love Attack WAS Pete Waterman in a way.
It was produced by Pete Hammond of PWL. The single had no producer noted on the release at
all, but it was in fact produced by Shaky & Steve Taylor. The album version does have a
lighter mix different to the single. It's not a lot different, just not as booming.
Love Attack is always up there with Turning Away as a fans best. I've never heard a fan
say it's not one of their favorites.
And any one who bought the CD Single or 12" to get the extended version...you just know
you've sung along at the first part in Karaoke style..
HERE ARE SOME LOVE ATTACK FACTS..
First appeared in UK chart (at position): 13/05/1989 (No.36)
Then a high of No.28.
Then dropped one place to No.29
Then last Seen in UK chart (at position): 03/06/1989 (No.46)
Length of time in chart: 4 weeks
The track was written by Steve & Heather Taylor. They also wrote 'Tell Me' and 'Pink
Champagne'
It was released on 7", 12" , CD Single and Cassette Single which featured a mail only
patch offer. All formats, apart from the 7", contained the Extended Version.
The Cassette Single & The Patch Which Was Available By Postal Offer Only
With The Cassette
The Shaky penned B-Side 'As Long As I Have You (Live)' was indentical to the previous
single 'Jezebel'. It may have been the same due to it being a rush release or maybe even
an error?!
The video was filmed on the 1989 Tour at the London Dominion Saturday 8th April.
(I went to one of the other 2 Dominion dates and missed being in it )
The video was voted by the fans that use this forum as Shaky's best video to date.
So does Love Attack deserve a salute? HELL YEA !!
